TAMIL NADU: COP BEATEN TO DEATH BY SAND SMUGGLERS

A policeman named Jagadeesh was allegedly beaten to death by sand smugglers when he tried to confront them in Nambiyar River on Monday, say reports. The cop, associated with Vijayanarayanam police station, received a tip-off about the sand smuggling on Sunday night. He rushed to the spot early on Monday morning to stop the smugglers where he was attacked in the head with an iron rod, say reports. An initial probe by police has suggested that the sand smugglers could have killed the cop.
