IIT-B study finds microplastics in major salt brands

A shocking study by a team of two IIT-Bombay students has revealed the presence of plastic in major salt brands in India. The presence of microplastics has come as a shock to everyone, as salt is an integral part of every dish.

Microplastics are small pieces of plastic usually measuring less than five millimetres in diameter. The plastic has been found in salt due to the product's degradation in the sea.

The study was done by a team from IIT-B's Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering. They found 626 microplastic particles in the tested samples. Reportedly, 63 per cent of the microplastics were found in the form of fragments and 37 per cent in fibre form.

It was concluded that an average Indian consumed around 117 micrograms of microplastics annually.  It is yet to be studied if this plastic intake will have an impact on health.
