Chatur Mukham is a horror thriller directed by Ranjeet Kamala Sankar and Salil V, written by K. Abhayakumar and Anil Kurian. The film stars Manju Warrier, Sunny Wayne, and Alencier Lay Lopez in the lead roles.

The film revolves around Thejaswini (Manju Warrier), a phone addict who is extremely active on social media. She happens to lose her phone and is forced to buy a temporary one at a low cost. As she gets her hand on the new phone, problems start rising. Later, she realizes that something is mysterious about the phone and that she is in a perilous situation. What happens next and what’s the back story of the incidents forms the rest of the plot.

Chatur Mukham has a novel concept that introduces us to a different dimension of horror-thriller flicks. Taking a diversion from the usual paranormal films, the writers and the directors have laid a foundation for something new in the genre. The film is technically prosperous, with great cinematography and fine VFX, but an engaging screenplay could have done wonders to this flick.

The film has a trailblazing plot, which had enormous scope to be an edge of the seat horror, but the over-ripened dialogues and scenes impact its quality.

The film has tried to peep into the genre of horrors through the eyes of science, rather than the usual religious treatments. A very fresh subject in Malayalam, the movie could have been a benchmark if there were more thrilling moments with twists. Despite the concerns, it is still a decent watch for its experimental subject.

With Manju Warrier, Sunny Wayne, and Alencier Lopez in prominent roles, the bunch of talented actors aren’t utilized to their maximum potential. Some melodramatic dialogues and scenes haven’t come out well. But as the film progresses into the crux part, the performances also get better and we can see the thespians in them.

Scripted by K. Abhayakumar and Anil Kurian, the screenplay could have been more interesting. The dialogues are monotonous, at times. Notwithstanding all these, they have successfully penned a few startling scenes. With a different road taken, they have bravely experimented this subject, paving the way for a film worth taking a ticket for.

Cinematography by Abinandhan Ramanujan is one of the elevating aspects of the film. The movie has great visuals, with properly used light settings. The climax light setups and the dutch angle shots have been used wisely, in the right places. Technically, the film is really fine and is a well-made horror on its technical side.

Directed by Ranjeet Kamala Sankar and Salil V, the film has many moments that keep your eyes glued to the screen. It also has some goosebumps scenes that twitch you. But dissecting the film’s directorial part, it has parts where the movie falls bland, making it less engaging, especially in the second half. Despite the directors trying a unique subject, more scrutiny and a better execution could have made this film an outstanding horror thriller.

Verdict: Chatur Mukham is a watchable horror flick, with captivating visuals and fine making.
