TOP 7 VILLAGE PANCHAYAT PRESIDENTS OF TAMIL CINEMA

Vivek
The cabinet was sworn in yesterday. But, it is not only the center that has power and a democratic set up. Tamil cinema has very often taken delight in depicting the power play in villages. Mostly consisting of hereditary headmen, Tamil cinema has shown us all kinds of ‘village presidents’: the wise, the dumb, the peaceful, the aggressive etc. There also has been a lot of comedy associated with it, including the defunct wisdom that is used to make judgments at many times. We look at some of the best remembered ‘village presidents’ of our times.
Vivek-Kadhal Sadukudu
The ‘village president’ has also been used many times as a subject of ridicule and sarcasm I films. One of the best perhaps is what Vivek did in Kadhal Sadukudu as the son of Saathappan, the reigning village headman. All the comic elements were there; the word play with name, the traditional ‘sombu’ to give the verdict and the usually antiquated judgments that are given out which Vivek vehemently opposed. The ‘Minor Kunju’ scene is one of the most famous in the movie.

Nevertheless, that is the only not-so-serious Village President we are dealing with here. The rest, as you will see, are of actors in serious roles who immortalized the whole phenomenon of giving away justice in villages whilst wielding Sombu under the Peepul Tree.
