Actress Kalyani Natarajan talks about her projects

Mysskin’s Pisaasu gave a beautiful mother to Tamil cinema in the form of Kalyani Natarajan. A Tamilian settled in Mumbai, Kalyani is pursuing her passion of acting, doing diverse roles in Tamil cinema now.

Kalyani is actively involved in Tamil theatre circuit in Mumbai and has done more than 15 plays there. This led her to a small role in Kannan’s Settai which was shot in Mumbai. Although auditioned for the role of Sathyaraj’s wife in director Vijay’s Thalaivaa, she could not make it. She has also done many commercials and was seen as Imran Khan’s sister-in-law in Gori Tere Pyaar Mein in Hindi.

Kalyani further explains her film journey:

Saivam

Since I had auditioned for Thalaivaa, director Vijay remembered and called me for a role in Saivam. The film is very close to my heart. The 38 days we shot, we were like a family and even now, we stay in touch.

The Mysskin experience

When I came down to Chennai during Saivam release, I met Mysskin sir as I got to know that he is looking for someone to play a character in his film. I had a very scary image of him through people. But I could not see what people saw in him to get scared. He auditioned me for a scene from Pisaasu and was casually talking to me. Later he said that I was selected. It was truly a 'Mysskin’ experience working in Pisaasu which was enriching and fun.

Projects on hand

Vijay 59 – I am doing a small cameo in Atlee’s Vijay 59. I play a doctor and come at a very important point in the movie. Atlee had seen Pisaasu and was keen to have me in the role.

Night Show- Editor Anthony’s film where I play Sathyaraj’s wife.

Geethanjali Selvaraghavan’s Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam where I play heroine’s mother. It is a substantial role.

Padmamagan’s Boomi.

Director Adhirooban’s Mupparimaanam where Shanthanu is the lead.

Vinodhan where my husband and I play hero’s parent’s role.

Acting

I generally tend to mould into the director’s vision and can be called as a director’s actor. I am constantly learning and finding the process very interesting.

Here is wishing Kalyani the very best in all her endeavors!
