Judges refuse to delete a song

The trend to file petitions against films that contain objectionable scenes and songs have become quite frequent of late. While it is common that the petitions will be filed even before the film is released or soon after its release, unusually this time a petitioner has sought to delete a song a year after its release. Jayaraman, in a public interest litigation petition at

the Madras High Court, alleged that the song June Ponal… in Unnale Unnale should be deleted from the film for containing some objectionable scenes.

Hearing the petition, a division bench comprising Chief Justice A.K. Ganguly and Justice Ibrahim Kalifulla, held that the petitioner had approached the court belatedly. With the film not being screened in theatres now it is impossible to pass an order to delete the song. Further, the Central Censor Board has passed the song only after thoroughly scrutinizing the scenes, the judges held.
