"I AM VERY HAPPY AND ENJOY A LOT OF FREEDOM WITH DIRECTOR KANNAN", PAROTTA SOORI

Interview Team : Jyothsna; Venkat

His very presence in the frame is enough to send the audience into a laughathon. His supersonic talent in making the parottas vanish from the plate may have earned him the name Parotta Soori but his hard work and perseverance have led him to the place where he is in today. Meet (Parotta) Soori in conversation with Senior Editor Jyothsna Bhavanishankar at the sets of director Kannan’s Oru Oorla Rendu Raja.

Your role in Oru Oorla Rendu Raja (OORR)

Like in all my films, I play the role of hero’s friend in Oru Oorla Rendu Raja (OORR).  I am Vemal’s close friend in the film. There is much scope to score in all the scenes as director Kannan has given me such an opportunity. There will be more of our pranks in OORR. In Desingu Raja, Vemal and I played it in opposite camps. Here we are on the same side. As per the title there are two Rajas and I am one Raja in the film.

I am one Raja in Oru Oorla Rendu Raja

How was it to work with director Kannan?

I like it a LOT (stresses on lot) working with Kannan. I am ready to work with him continuously and whenever he calls me. I am very happy and enjoy a lot of freedom. He lets me improvise on my emotions and even after a take, if there is a change in my face, he would let me do one more take. If a comedian gets a director like Kannan, what else one could ask for?

About the comedy scenes in OORR- were they written by you or by the director?

Everything is written by Kannan. The content has to be there in the script for comedians to improvise. I can’t take credit for the scenes in the film. He has created the playground for me to play around. In that space, there will be some work for me too.

I don’t know to mouth dialogues as per the script. I give counters according to my co-artist’s reaction. I speak in the scenes like how I speak in my real life with my friend. Most unexpected dialogues strike me when I am in front of the camera. Some directors like this quality of mine a lot. I myself don’t know when I would speak such counters.

Priya Anand

The major part of the film involves the three of us- Vemal, Priya Anand and me.  Priya is a talented artist who has given hits like Ethir Neechal. It was fun working with Priya Anand.  There are scenes where I have even pulled her leg besides Vemal’s.

Where have you shot for OORR?

Chidambaram, Mayavaram, Chennai, Andhra. There is an opening song that is meant to be shot in a village. That has been split into different segments and is being shot in different places.

Producer Michael Rayappan

I am very happy and lucky to be working with a producer like Michael Rayappan. He is extremely supportive of the team and does all that is required for the quality deliverance of the product.

What do you do when you don’t shoot?

When I don’t have shoots, I spend time with Samuthirakani, Sasikumar and Suseendhiran. In fact I spend more time with Kani annan (Samuthirakani). He appreciates me a lot. Generally, when people go to Kani annan, they will let him speak and watch but whereas when I go, it will be the other way round.

Are you this humorous in real life too?

Yes, I am fun to be with right from my childhood. When there is a group, you can always hear my voice on top. I did not learn comedy in cinema. What I see in real life is what I do before the camera. My real life experiences are the ones I use in cinema.

You are one of the most successful comedians in Tamil right now. Was this something you had expected when you started?

My attempt was to become a comedian. I have struggled hard to come to this place. There are many who have gone back unsuccessfully. I did not want to be one among them. My perseverance and hard work have brought me to this level. Audiences are the ones who would decide where I have to stand now.

Of course I was hopeful that I would become a comedian one day. More than me, my friends gave me that confidence and directors have trusted me. Today, when people applaud my performance, the credit should go to the directors who have directed me. They are the ones who have handheld me, spotting my talents. I am nothing without my directors and am indebted to my directors and producers.

It is a challenge to make the audience laugh always. How do you handle this challenge?

It is indeed a tricky preposition to make people laugh all the time. Something that worked yesterday as comedy will not work today. I keep watching the films in theatres along with audience and observe their reaction. The sequences where I had envisaged the audience to laugh, they would laugh. I am like an audience only. I can assess the LOL moments even at the time of story narration. I am also of the type who would not get easily satisfied by my performance and strive continuously to evolve with every passing day.

How is it that with Siva Karthikeyan your chemistry works out the best?

Beyond our friendship off the camera, we both know that, with the slightest opportunity, both of us would be ready to outdo each other. When I give a counter to him, I would have already thought about what counter he is going to give me. If I am not prepared, he would beat me hollow in this game.

Similarly, he is also well aware of my reactions and counters. In our scenes together, there would be more in front of the camera than what is actually written in the script. I enjoy such moments with Siva Karthikeyan. Beyond acting and character, this is what that appears on the scene and that’s what makes our combination so lively, natural and energetic. One needs to have good rapport with the co-artist.

For the first time, you are teaming with Simbu in Idhu Namma Aalu. How was the experience?

It was a massive challenge because Santhanam sir has established a huge combination with Simbu. Audience should not feel the absence of Santhanam there and should say Soori has filled the lacuna. Or they should say that I have done better than him because Santhanam has set the bar too high. Till now people have appreciated my work in the film. Cinematographer Balasubramaniem has shown me very stylishly with my costume, hairstyle and color. You will see a slick Soori and would be shocked to see my looks in Idhu Namma Aalu.

Audience should not feel the absence of Santhanam

One current comedian you like

I like all of them and I have enjoyed films like Soodhu Kavvum and Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavaanigalum. All of them are doing their jobs quite efficiently. There are quite a lot of young comedians now. I want everyone to succeed as I was also in their position a few years back.

Slapstick comedy or dialogue comedy. Which one do you prefer?

I like both and have done both kinds of films. I have done films like Desingu Raja where body language will be in focus and films like Sundarapandian, where my performance would be subtle. If you allow me, I will deliver comedy without any movement.

I am actually a director’s artist. I like when a director enacts and tells me what to do because that’s when the audience will see a different Soori. With every director, I emerge differently. I would like to remain a director’s artist as I deliver the way he expects me to. Therefore when you see the film, I am his artist.

I would like to remain a director’s artist

You have worked with many directors. With whom do you share the best comfort levels?

I am comfortable with everyone but working with Sasikumar, Kani Annan and Suseendhiran is like being at home. I am their pet son.

Would you act as a hero?

I keep getting offers as hero. Around 10-15 directors have approached me to play a hero in their film. I don’t want that. I want to establish myself as a comedian. Let me first scale this stage now. Audiences respect my work and have kept me in good position now. There are so many ways to make them laugh and let me continue to do this.

In a 50 over cricket match, Dhoni or Sachin may not have performed but the man who strikes 65 runs in the last few overs will be the talking point. For that match, HE is the hero. In a same way, in a film, when I score the maximum, I will stay in the mind of audience and I will be the hero. When someone says, “You can go to the film for Soori’s comedy”, I become the hero there. That is enough for me.

What are your ongoing projects?

Suseendhiran’s Jeeva, Hari sir’s Poojai and Pandiraj’s film. I will be working in Ezhil sir’s film, one more film with Suseendhiran and S R Prabhakaran’s film.

Here is wishing Soori all the best in all his endeavors!
