Anupriya Patel, minister of family and health,  submitted a report in Lok Sabha which states that no one from TamilNadu has been booked under Cigarette and other Tobacco products Act (2013) from April 2015 to May 2017. According to data of the year 2008, 3,857 people in TamilNadu were under charge of COTPA. However, the columns of the past two years have been empty despite the ban on smoking in public. But when Times of India accessed the records from court documents, Police have booked 141 people against the offense and out of which only six people were fined. Reportedly Director of Public Health K Kolandaisamy said that except Chennai no other city has a dedicated squad of health inspectors because of shortage in staff.
