The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Uttarakhand High Court's order recognising Ganga and Yamuna as living entities, allowing the rivers to enjoy all rights provided by the Constitution to humans. The HC order had allowed complaints to be filed in the name of the two rivers. Notably, New Zealand's Whanganui River was the first to be given such a status.
