Kahaani 2 is a thriller directed by Sujoy Ghosh starring Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal. It is the next installment in the franchise of the blockbuster movie Kahaani that had Vidya Balan as the protagonist

The film talks about a woman who tries to save her adopted daughter from her abusive uncle. Arjun Rampal plays a sub-inspector who helps the woman in her attempts.

Vidya Balan who reprises the role of Durga Rani Singh has carried the entire film on her shoulders. Right from the first frame, she shows her effortless performance and the transition of her emotions along the way gets you glued to the screen.

Arjun Rampal is perfect for the role of the cop who reads the diary of Durga to know about her past and adds to the splendid casting which proves to be the pillar of strength for the film. His character becomes likeable and even the smaller characters are so aptly cast. The woman who plays Arjun Rampal’s wife, the love and care she has for her over working, police officer husband are all dealt with beautifully by Sujoy Ghosh.

Sujoy Ghosh must be commended for his tight screenplay and story which gives you the experience of an edge of the seat thriller. The writing shows the smartness and intelligence of the director. The film also has a subtle touch on a social issue (child abuse) but does not preach about it and there lies the beauty. Makes you feel that it is too good to be true but there are proper justifications to most of the twists and questions in the film with very few glitches and logic loopholes. The music and camera work are brilliant and add to the mood of the film which sticks to its genre.

Vidya Balan has aced the flashback portion which is strong enough to explain the events happening in the present. She has put in her heart and soul to make the film a treat for the viewer just like the previous installment of the franchise.

But the only thing that could bring this sort of a performance driven, well-made thriller down is how the film ends. This has not worked as expected. The pre-climax and climax portions lack what it takes for the film to become a gem of a thriller and it seems like the director is rushing to a cliched end. Also, the conflict drops flat towards the end of the second half and a lot of questions arise with the predictable, forced climax which lacks the bang.

Nevertheless, Kahaani 2 is a well-made story of a mother who goes out of the way to save her paralysed daughter from the abuse she faces.

Verdict: An intense Kahaani shouldered by Vidya and Arjun Rampal which could’ve had a better end! A worthy watch for its performances and screenplay
