Playback singer honored with Phalke award

The legendary playback singer Manna Dey has been selected for the Dada Saheb Phalke award (2007). The 90-year-old Dey is known for belting out songs like Ae mere pyaare watan, Upar Gagan Vishal, Sur na saje kya gaun main, Jhanak jhanak tori baaje payaliya, Yeh dosti hum nahin torenge and Zindagi kaisi hai paheli, which still remains fresh in our memories.

Manna Dey recorded his first song for the film Tamanna in the year 1943 and since then there was no looking back for this singer with the golden voice. The singer is currently in the US and is expected to fly down to Bangalore to receive the honor bestowed on him.
