BOXING FOR THE BOX
Salman still rules

After a lull last week when 'All the best' took over as the top movie of the week from the former champion Blue, it’s time for the clash of the titans. Or that’s what the trade thought. Amitabh's Aladin was pitted against Salman - Ajay Devgan's London Dreams. With both being highly budgeted, the marketing was pretty high for Aladin and surprisingly low for the Vipul Shah's Musical extravaganza. With Aladin costing Eros somewhere around Rs. 35 crores to produce and additional 7 crores for marketing it needed a spectacular start and at the same time the Vipul Shah star-studded musical London Dreams is speculated to carry a price tag of around Rs. 65 crores.

After a dull Friday for both the new movies, London Dreams slowly improved Friday evening onwards and finally ended up with an average of Rs. 15 crores net. The movie came out with respectable numbers on Monday and Tuesday too but the ongoing India- Australia cricket match ruined the smooth flow of revenue at most of the places. London Dreams will end up making a decent 25 crores net in its first full week and due to tough competition ahead will think of a 45 crore total net in its theatrical run. Due to its heavy pricing, the movie is sure to be on the losing side.

On the other side, the effects-heavy Aladin did little to impress the masses as it took a poor 3.4 crores at the box-office over the weekend. The sorry state of affairs continued for the Ritesh- Amitabh- Sanjay Dutt starrer on Monday and Tuesday too with alarmingly low turnout at the

box office despite Monday being a holiday. The movie will end up with a 7 crore-week and a 12 crore-total in its entire theatrical run.

Last week’s releases 'Fruit and Nut' and 'Bal Ganesh 2' could not even celebrate a complete week at the box-office at most of the places and were taken off almost all theatres by Friday, the collection for both together hardly touching half a crore.

But the Diwali comedy All the Best still continued its run by raking an incredible 4 crore at the box office which allowed the movie to break the 40 crore mark. Beating all expectations, this Ajay Devgan movie is all set to end its run in the vicinity of 50 crores giving the Ajay Devgan – Rohit Shetty duo its second continuous hit.

Blue took a major beating this week as the underwater spectacle tumbled a disturbing 80% to Rs. 1.2 crores which enabled the movie to see its total net collection near the 40 crore mark.

London Dreams doing little post-release publicity will find it tough to sustain the market with 'Ajab Prem ki ghazab kahani' and 'Jail' release this weekend. Both the new movies carrying good pre release buzz, it would be quite interesting to see how the Musical Drama can compete with the comedy and the drama.

This weekend at the box the champion is London Dreams but the champion doesn’t look fit enough to win round two as new and big players are ready to battle it out for the coveted Box Office Crown. Can the Champion retain its position or will there be a new champion next week - let’s see in the next edition of Boxing for the box. Till then enjoy your popcorn and your coffee. Ciao!
