Kaalai - Music Review
This Tarun Gopi directed Silambarasan starrer has been in the news for the brisk pace in which it was shot. What left everyone guessing is the reason for this Yuvan loyalist to choose the up and coming GV Prakash Kumar to compose music for his Kaala. Whether the reasons for this change are purely artistic or otherwise we will let you to decide for yourself but as far as the quality of the music is concerned, we will give you our expert views.
Kaalai

Eppo Nee - Madhusree

A Chirpy song about a girl fantasizing about her new found love for her man. Naughty and interesting lyrics add some pep to this number which maintains the same tempo throughout with interesting flute and violin interludes and a fitting finale with the piano. However the highlight of the song is Madhusree’s voice which gives it the right feel. Her pronunciation definitely needs some honing though. A sweet melody with some rich instrumentation.

Ghutka Lakkadi - Lucky Ali, Sunidhi Chauhan

A foot tapping and fast paced number that is sure to become the flavor of the season for the masses. Lucky Ali and Sunidhi Chauhan get together to give it a Sufi pop feel ala the Pakistani singer Runa laila’s numbers. Lyrics seems to have taken a beating in this song, perhaps the composer gave the rhythm more emphasis but a very interesting dance number nevertheless.

Kaala Kaala - Benny, Mamtha Mohandas

A soothing melody very well crooned by actress Mamtha Mohandas and Benny. Again better pronunciation could have pushed it up a few notches. The opening sax piece and the interludes are interesting and the slow transition to electronics is appealing. Kudos to Mamtha for her rendition while Benny’s pacy rap in between adds a new dimension. Not too innovative but an effort worthy of mention.

Kutti Pisasae - Silambarasan, Suchitra

A typical ‘Kuthu” song aimed at the masses, typical of numbers in Simbu’s films. Suchitra’s voice does lend the necessary push, probably a song that’ll bank on Simbu’s dancing skills. Lyrics aren’t much to write home about except they seem naughty and are about the two of them teasing each other.

Vanthutaanda Kaala – Rahul, Silambarasan, Benny

The slow tempo that gradually picks pace and the punchy lyrics eulogizing the title character spell intro song in every sense. Overlapping voices of Benny and Rahul punctuated with Silambarasan’s makes for interesting listening, the arrangement of percussions only adding to the feel.

Veeramulla - Manickavinayagam, Seergazhi Sivachidambaram

Folk suddenly seems to be the favorite in Kollywood. Typical folk number of the kind performed at temple functions, nothing different tune wise. The voices of Manicka Vinayagam and Seergazhi Sivachidambaram lend character to the number. Visuals should save this song from appearing repetitive.

Verdict:

G.V.Prakash Kumar seems to have taken it easy with this album, springing only a few surprises. Mamtha and Madhusree’s numbers stand out while the kuthu and pop number might appeal to the masses.
