The audience of a movie could reach is determined by the certificate a film gets from the 'Central Board Of Film Certification'. In general, most films get 'U' (unrestricted) , 'U/A' (which requires parental guidance for children below 12 years), and there is the 'A' certified films which are restricted to adults viewership.
There is always a taboo or an extra buzz when a movie gets certified with A, as it becomes restricted to a particular audience based on the age groups. A film with 'A' certificate necessarily need not to be a cheap body show or nudity type contents, but the themes can be bold in terms of violence or adults orientated topics that are not suitable for the minors.
