PATTAS CAST & CREW
Production: Sathya Jyothi Films Cast: Dhanush, Mehreen Pirzada, Sneha Direction: R.S. Durai Senthil Kumar Screenplay: R.S. Durai Senthil Kumar Story: R.S. Durai Senthil Kumar Music: Vivek & Mervin Background score: Vivek & Mervin Cinematography: Om Prakash Dialogues: R.S. Durai Senthil Kumar

Pattas is an action film written and directed by RS Durai Senthilkumar, starring Dhanush, Sneha and Mehreen Pirzada in the lead roles. It has Nasser, Munishkanth, KPY Sathish and others in crucial supporting roles. The film is produced by Sendhil Thyagarajan and Arjun Thyagarajan under the banner Sathya Jyothi Films. Vivek-Mervin head the music department while the cinematography is handled by Om Prakash.

Dhanush plays the role of Pattas (a) Sakthi, an audio thief who turns into a mixed martial arts fighter after he meets Kanyakumari (played by a mature Sneha). He has his roots in Adimurai, an ancient martial art, considered as the base for every other martial art in the world. Sakthi's father Thiraviyamperumal(also played by Dhanush) is an exponent in the artform, and how he influences Sakthi forms a major chunk of the plot. The film follows the usual underdog-becomes-champion template, so all that matters is how well it engages and entertains you.

In that sense, Pattas turns out to be a neatly written film. There is no forced romantic track between Dhanush and either of the female leads, and right from the start, it is clear as of what it wants to achieve. The characters of Sakthi, Kanyakumari, and Thiraviyamperumal are sketched really well, and Sneha in particular stands out as Kanyakumari. She fights with the same valour as the men in the film, and also takes a hit or two.

Dhanush, who plays a dual role in this film, shows proper difference between both the characters, not just in terms of body language, but also the way he speaks and acts. As Sakthi, he has an 'I don't care about anything' persona, something on the lines of what we saw in Polladhavan. On the other hand, as Thiraviyamperumal he has a unique kind of swagger, that's rooted and stylish at the same time.

Among the supporting actors, Nasser and Munishkanth make their experience count with some delightful acting, while KPY Sathish proves to be a good value addition with his well timed comedic punches, especially one of his counters to Dhanush that goes "Passion illa, Pesama Paper Potru" was timely and received huge applause. Mehreen Pirzada could have emoted little better, as her portions lack energy. Om Prakash's cinematography makes the film look colourful and a treat to watch.

The film's main issue is the predictability. With no novelty being added to the existing template, we know what's going to happen, both in the emotional portions as well as the action sequences. But what makes us invest in the action sequences is Vivek - Mervin's music. The film picks up steam as the pulsating 'Mavane' track plays in the background, and there's no turning back till the last frame. Pattas ends on a high note, giving us a Diwali for this Pongal.

Verdict: Pattas is a well made commercial entertainer with good performances that highlights our ancient martial arts.

PATTAS SONGS REVIEW

Review by : Behindwoods Review Board Album Release Date : Dec 28,2019

1. Puthu Suriyan
Singers: Anuradha Sriram
Lyrics: Uma Devi

Puthu Suriyan is a slow-paced melody track of the album. The song starts with an instrumental chunk of piano music. In Anuradha Sriram’s soothing vocals, Puthu Suriyan is a track filled with mother’s love which echoes in the words penned down by Uma Devi. The track’s lagging tempo adds to the beauty of the tune.

2. Chill Bro
Singers: Dhanush
Lyrics: Vivek - Mervin

Chill Bro is an out-and-out modern funky tune. The song has a happy-go-lucky mood throughout. Vivek and Mervin have included major shades of Indian percussions’ music (Tabla, Stick duff, Duff, Dholak) which adds to the jazz of the song. Dhanush’s energetic voice booms with expression and the song’s lively tune make it a peppy dance number as well. The lyrics by the music composers connect well, especially with the young generation. The song has a fast-paced tempo.

3. Jigidi Killadi
Singers
: Anirudh Ravichander
Lyrics: Vivek

Jigidi Killadi is a tune that is light at heart but still has a touch of contemporary music infused to it. Jigidi Killadi witnessed the reunion of Dhanush-Anirudh combo after a brief gap, but the song’s josh has made up for the wait. The lyrics by Vivek tells us the story of the gorgeous, yet a slightly proud heroine, who the hero dotes. Jigidi Killadi’s orchestration is played at a normal tempo, and the base track is enriched with piano, guitar beats with regular percussions.

4. Morattu Thamizhan Da
Singers
: Vivek Siva, Mervin Solomon
Lyrics: Vivek

Morattu Thamizhan Da is a song that has more of a folk song style from Pattas that explains the pride of being a Thamizhan which is evident in Vivek’s lyrics. Again, Vivek-Mervin’s obsession with Indian percussions has added to the song’s punch, making it inspiringly impressive. The track has a normal pace, but the rhythm repeats at four beats which makes the song seem as energetic as a fast-paced one. Morattu Thamizhan tune is also interlaced with Guitars, Charango, Ukulele, Trumpet, trombone and Horns tune.

5. Piriyadha Enna
Singers
: Vijay Yesudas, Niranjana
Lyrics: Ku Karthik

Piriyadha Enna is a romantic melody in the voice of Vijay Yesudas and Niranjana. The song’s music is a smooth gliding tune and the lyrics by Ku Karthik carry it forward. The charm and grace of the song are increased by the guitar-violin interlude in the middle. A well-orchestrated soft tune that will be pleasant to hear.

6. Mavane
Singers:
Arivu, Vivek Siva
Lyrics: Arivu

In the booming voice of Vivek Siva and Arivu, Mavane spits out fire and whoever hears it will definitely feel the heat! The song is like background music for a raging bull ready to take on its opponents, and anyone who hears it will be stirred for sure. The lyrics by Arivu are perfectly in sync and match the song’s energy.  The song electrifying base makes one wait for the visuals for the Mavane song!

7. Mothers Love - Instrumental Theme
Performed by Mervin on Piano
Chennai Strings Orchestra and Nathan Woodwinds

This instrumental maintains the main idea of the title - Mother’s love. The important aspect of the theme song strongly reflects the shade of the ‘Puthu Suriyan’ song. The song is based on the piano tunes which is performed beautifully by Mervin.

Verdict: Vivek-Mervin delivers a pucca commercial album that power-packs Pattas for this Pongal.
