EXPECTATION METER

Director Gokul’s much anticipated comedy, Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara is releasing on the 2nd of October, amidst peaking expectations. Now, over to Mrs Nandini Karky, the subtitler of the movie, who gives us ten solid reasons to watch the movie.

Dear readers,

Why am I writing this article on 'The Top 10 reasons to watch Itharkkuthaane Aasaipattai BalaKumara (shortened to iDhaaba)'? Well, after the director, the editor and their close associates, it’s me who has watched this movie, the most number of times and analyzed it, word by word too. To dispel the suspense, I'm the subtitler of this movie. There are two reasons why I may be a good fit to do this article. One, I'm not a creator but an interpreter and therefore, I don't have the possessiveness or protectiveness of a creator. Two, being a subtitler, I have watched the movie scene by scene, frame by frame and dialogue by dialogue and thus have a microscopic view of the movie. Apart from that, it's a fun exercise to tell you why you should watch it.

Here are my top 10 reasons on why one should watch iDhaaba (not in any particular order):

1. To burn more fat: No matter if you are watching the movie for the first time or the tenth time, I doubt that you can sit still in your seats. My bet is that, you will be on the floor, rolling in laughter.

2. To learn an exotic language: No better way to learn a bit of the lingo of our city: 'Madras Baashai'. Believe me, it does have good words too.

3. To go in different directions and come to the same point: There are not one or two stories in this movie, but many. These stories take off in many interesting directions but seamlessly meet at that single point.

4. To forget time: In the well-paced and tightly wound screenplay, one will forget what happened to those 2 odd hours.

5. To see an 'organic' movie: Every dialogue and every piece of humor arises from the situations encountered in the movie. There is nothing artificial or forced and everything natural about it.

6. To know why some songs, you’ve loved, were written: Be it the cheeky ' En veetula', the heavenly 'birthday song', the naughty 'prayer song' or the meaningful 'naye naye', you will see how the songs blend and enhance the narrative of the movie.

7. To get to know some interesting women: Although this movie has a huge cast, the characters of both the heroines, Nandita and Swati, stand out well-etched and it is they who drive the story forward.

8. To meet the guy who sits next to you in office: Meet Ashwin in a role, who will make you nod your head with empathy or exasperation, depending on who you are.

9. To make friends with a guy you would normally run away from: Vijay Sethupathy gives an awesome performance as 'Sumar Moonji Kumar'. He will cry and make you cry, cry with laughter, that is.

10. To discover something that you may not be looking for but something you definitely need: This is something that you will discover when you watch the movie. That something will make you come out of theatres with a smile but with a thought, that will stay for a long time to come.

I’m looking forward to watching it on the big screen with you all, starting October 2nd.
