The kings of Kollywood

We live in a nation that is free from monarchy,  so it takes a film for us to visually relate to any pre-independence era, especially the pre 19th century, when monarchy was the most common form of government and a time period where the video or photo stock footages are limited.

Though we still have King and Queen’s rule in few countries, it is mostly constitutional monarchy with limited political influence. Be it a bed time story or a full length feature film, stories based on monarchs have a special affiliation towards the audience.

Monarchial history films is something which if rightly spiced up could cater to wide range of people from 6 to 60’s. Tamil cinema has seen several films like Karnan, Rajaraja Cholan, Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi, Kochadaiiyaan and Alauddinum Arputha Vilakkum, which glorify monarchial history, some fictional while some are based on real life incidents.

Of late it is getting increasingly hard to make a film with such production values to bring back flashy mounted sets of 19th century. But Baahubali appears to be an exception with rare fictional monarchial entertainer with grandeur which is anticipated to stand the test of time.
