An overview of children's films in Tamil

Today, the 14th November, is the birthday of the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru, which is celebrated as Children’s Day in the country.

Time and again the Tamil movie scenario has been dotted by films which catered to children or had the story revolve around them. We look at some of them here.

Mazhalai Pattalam in the year 1980 was directed by Lakshmi had Sumitra and Vishnuvardhan as central characters who were surrounded by kids. Later we had My Dear Kuttichathan, which was actually a dubbed film from Malayalam and the first 3 D film made in India. The film was much loved and enjoyed for its 3D effects.

Mani Ratnam’s Anjali focused on a special child while his Kannathil Muthamittal dealt with the issues of adoption with the Srilankan strife as its background.

In the recent years we have had Haridas, Thanga Meengal, Deiva Thirumgal, Poovarasam Peepee, Pasanga throwing spotlight on children and their issues. Golisoda was about marginalized children trying to find their identities while Kaaka Muttai was an enjoyable take again on children living below the poverty line. Suriya’s Pasanga 2 is all ready to hit the screens soon which is about hyperactive kids and we are sure, in the future too, we are going to have more films on children that address their issues.

Here is wishing a very happy children’s day!
