A tribute to Vaali
Usually when we listen to Tamil movie songs, some of us will be able to identify the music director, some will identify the singer but most of us will identify the lyrics written by “Kavingar Vaali” the greatest lyricist of our times whose first death anniversary went past a few days ago.

Padmashri Vaali has been associated with Tamil industry for the past five decades and has written over 15,000 songs. His first song was in the movie Azhagarmalai Kallan in 1958.  After that there was no looking back. Vaali’s lyrics were simple and reached the hearts of many. He has written many songs for Dr. MG Ramachandran that have been instrumental for his political career.

Kavignar Vaali has penned lyrics for movies of Sivaji Ganesan to Sivakarthikeyan. Vaali has authored lyrics for different style of songs from melody to carnatic to folk to western.

It is a well-known fact that Vaali doesn’t take days to write the lyrics for a song. Usually he chews beetle nut leaves and when he sits, he will finish a song within minutes. If a tune for a song is very complicated, the lyricist that comes to the mind of most Tamil music directors is Vaali. Director Shankar always makes sure that at least one song in his movies is written by the great poet.

Vaali has also acted in movies like Hey Ram, Sathya, Paarthale Paravasam etc. He has also written notable novels. This legendary lyricist has won Padmashri award in 2007 and also has won Tamil Nadu Film award for best lyricist five times.
