Santosh Sivan is the first Tamil cinematographer to be awarded the Padmashri

Santosh Sivan- It’s a first for South India!

The Padma Awards for this year have been announced and as usual, there are quite a few from Tamil Nadu and also from Tamil cinema who have been honored with the prestigious title. Besides Kamal Haasan and Vairamuthu, there is ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan who has made his fellow cinematographers proud when his name was announced for Padmashri.


Known for his exemplary cinematographic work in films like Roja, Urumi and Raavanan, Santosh Sivan is also responsible for wielding the directorial baton for Terrorist, Mali and Navarasa in Tamil. Currently he is working in Suriya’s Anjaan.


Santosh Sivan is the founding member of the Indian Society of Cinematographers. He holds quite a few firsts in his field. He is the first cinematographer in Asia Pacific to be honored with American Society of Cinematographers membership. And he is the first cinematographer from the Southern film industry to be honored with the Padmashri.
