What will be the fate of Madras Cafe in Tamil?

Aug 22, 2013

Former Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi is one of the many voices in the state asking the Tamil Nadu government to take ‘appropriate action’ against the John Abraham film ‘Madras Café’. The film set during the Sri Lankan civil war allegedly paints an objectionable image of the LTTE, according to the petitioner seeking the film’s ban in Tamil Nadu. The petitioner also raised fears of the content leading to law and order issues in the state.

The Madras High Court has refused to issue a stay order of ‘Madras Café’ by pointing out that the Hindi film had earned the necessary certification from the CBFC. The Tamil dubbed version however is yet to get the clearance from the censor board.

Representing the film locally, T.R. Rajagopalan, senior counsel, said that ‘the film was purely fictional.’ The film’s hero John Abraham too had reiterated during his press meet in Chennai that the film is purely a commercial entertainer and that the film did not take any sides.

It will be intersting to see if theatres go ahead and release the Hindi version regardless of the fate of the Tamil version.
