According to the US Geological Survey, the quake struck just off the coast before 8:00 am local time (2000 Sunday GMT) at a depth of about 52 kilometres (32 miles) near Levin, about 90 kilometres north of Wellington,

She interrupted the Host Ryan Bridge to tell him what was happening at the moment.

“We’re just having a bit of an earthquake here Ryan, quite a decent shake here,” she said, looking up and around the room.

“But, um, if you see things moving behind me, she added.

The earthquake was strong enough to be felt by thousands of people in New Zealand but no major damage or injuries were reported.

Once the shaking stopped, the Prime Minister maintained her calm composure and told the host that they seem to be fine.

“We’re fine Ryan! I am not under any hanging lights, I look like I’m in a structurally sound place, she said.”
