In a shocking and bizarre case, a teenage girl fractured her thumb during a cricket game. The injury resulted in getting her thumb amputated but got replaced with a big toe after botched surgery.

Teen girl got her thumb replaced by toe after botched surgery

The teen has been identified as Britney Thomas, 17, who fractured her left thumb while playing cricket in Victoria, Australia in March, 2018.

As per Washington Post report, after rushing to the hospital, the girl underwent a surgery at Latrobe Regional Hospital, but had to be brought back six days later as doctors bungled the operation.

On reaching the hospital, doctors found Britney's thumb had turned black and they were forced to amputate her thumb, replacing it with her toe.

While speaking to ABC news, Britney said, "They took me into emergency and they were like, ‘Oh, you’re probably going to lose your thumb. I was in so much disbelief. Currently, when people ask me- Oh why does your thumb look so weird? And I’m like, Because it’s not my thumb, it’s my toe."

Meanwhile, Leanne Keating, Britney's mum, said: “They pulled the plaster off and it was very dark, looked very dead. Doctors then put blood-sucking leeches to try to get blood pumping to Britney's hand. They even sewed her thumb to her groin to try to restore the thumb’s flow of blood."

"But medical staff were finally forced to amputate Britney's thumb. She was also forced to drop out of school because she missed so much class after the injury," Britney's mum added.

Reports also suggest that, Tom Ballantyne, a lawyer from the teen girl, told The Washington Post that "It was an uncomplicated fracture, an uncomplicated surgery and a pretty awful mistake."
