The Ikhbariya TV Channel displayed footage of a huge fire following the explosion. According to the officials’ statements to state media, the explosion occurred between the Syrian towns of Ad Dumayr and Adra, situated in the northwest of the capital of Damascus.

“Initial indications are this was a terrorist attack,” Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali Ghanem told Ikhbariya. He added that the pipelines supply power to stations in the south and the technical teams were already on the ground.

“The electricity minister was later quoted by state news agency SANA as saying that power had gradually started being restored to the country’s provinces,” The New Indian Express reported.

Earlier in 2013 when most parts of Syria were hit by rebel shelling on gas pipelines, people witnessed large scale power shutdown. The Arab Gas Pipeline system extends from Egypt into Jordan and Syria.
