The government of Tamil Nadu has changed the names of various places, in order to ensure that their English pronunciations and spellings match the Tamil pronunciations.
This was notified as a recommendation of an experts committee. Almost 1,018 places’ names have been altered. Collectors are expected to take the necessary steps for changing the names of the places as per the prescribed alteration, with the help of local bodies concerned.
Some of the changed names are:
