MADRAS HIGH COURT JUDGE SEEKS 'CONTEMPT OF COURT' ACTION AGAINST SURIYA FOR 'NEET - COURT'S COMMENT!

Tamil actor Suriya had recently commented on the student suicides in Tamil Nadu over fear of writing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test amid the global coronavirus pandemic. Following this, the High Court Justice SM Subramaniam wrote a letter to Chief Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi to initiate contempt proceedings against him.

"Fearing threat to lives due to Covid-19, judges were dispensing justice via video conferencing, but ordered students to write NEET exam without fear," the actor said in a strongly-worded statement. After this Justice Subramaniam claimed that his statement amount to contempt of court as both the integrity of the judges and the judicial system were undermined. He claimed that his statement also possesses a threat as it might reduce the confidence of the public on the judiciary.

Three NEET aspirants in Tamil Nadu committed suicide on Saturday, which was a day before the entrance test due to extreme stress and fear. Suriya in this regard had asked the government to scrap NEET. Substantiating the same, almost all the political parties in Tamil Nadu have been opposing this entrance test since they believe it to be discriminating against students who come from underprivileged backgrounds.
