April 13th of 1984 was the day when India won its first Asia Cup title. In a historic match between India and Pakistan at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, India won by 54 runs.  So far, the Indian cricket team has managed to win the prestigious tournament seven times out of the 14 editions of Asia Cup that has been conducted so far.

India had also topped the table with a grand total of eight points in the inaugural edition of Asia Cup. In the most recent edition in 2018, India defeated Bangladesh in the finals.  However, this match continues to remain special for a lot of reasons. On that particular year (1984), only three teams that is India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka participated in the match. 

The team was led by the able leadership of Sunil Gavaskar and scored a total of 188/4 in 46 overs. Wicket-keeper and batsman Surinder Khanna scored the most with a knock of 56 runs. All eyes were on Roger Binny and Ravi Shastri, who managed to scalp three wickets for India. The highlights of this match will certainly make its way to fans’ must- watch list of cricket highlights. 

Asia Cup is scheduled to take place later this year but like other major events, the dates haven’t been decided due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
