A 25-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh has been booked for allegedly setting fire on his brother’s wife after failed rape attempt, the police said on Sunday.

Woman Set On Fire by Brother-in-law After Failed Rape Attempt

The incident took place on June 11. But since the victim could not speak due to burn injuries, there was a delay in registering the complaint. “My sister is improving. She spoke to us on Saturday, for the first time after she received burn injuries and narrated the incident,” the victim’s brother, who filed the complaint, was quoted as saying by India Today.

In her statement, the victim told, her brother-in-law poured kerosene and set her on fire after a failed rape attempt. She has over 80% burn injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bareilly.

“Since her marriage in May 2016, my sister was apprehensive of her brother-in-law’s intentions and when she informed her husband, he rebuked her. With the support of his family members, her brother-in-law poured kerosene on her and set her afire after a failed rape bid,” the victim’s brother further said.

The accused has been booked under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to attempt to murder.
