According to reports, the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes worth Rs 14 lakh crore is back into the system as they were deposited in banks. This would benefit the government in terms of tax revenues from large deposits above the prescribed Rs 2.5 lakh per individual limit. Reportedly, the government expected that scrapped notes worth Rs 3 lakh crore wouldn’t be back into the system as they were part of the unaccounted money.
