THEERPPU MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

India is a country rife with political undertones in mundane and daily actions, and Theerppu's screenplay plays off this fact in its own style. Directed by Rathish Ambat, Theerppu has Prithviraj Sukumaran, Vijay Babu, Saiju Kurup, Indrajith Sukumaran, Isha Talwar, and Hana Reji Koshy in pivotal roles. The 151-minute movie is written by Murali Gopy, known for his work in Kammara Sambhavam, Lucifer, and Tiyaan.

Theerppu follows four childhood friends Abdullah, Parmeshwaran, Ram, and Kalyan and their unexpected reunion. When Parmeshwaran goes to meet Ram, he accidentally meets Abdullah, setting off a chain of events that unfolds their dirty past. How the past actions affect and haunt their present forms the crux of the story.

Murali Gopy's screenplay is the highlight of Theerppu. Layered characters that unfold every moment and the resulting tension is what the movie is all about. Some dark humor certainly eases out the tension in the movie. Add to the mix some political undertones that don't really pan out much in the storyline and you have the Prithviraj starrer.

Theerppu has great visuals thanks to Sunil KS, the cinematographer. With the first half dominated by lavish interiors of the resort and its many statues and artefacts of historical importance, the frames of the film end up being rich and aesthetic. Some angles taken to show character expressions create the desired effect, be it the menacing villains or heartbroken victims.

But these visuals don't make up for the shallow and vague politics of the film. Theerppu is peppered with political references and call outs and thus, seems politically intelligent. However, these become mere fodder for jokes and monologues and never the source of a strong stance. In fact, at certain moments these become excess and unnecessary in the film.

Theerppu has a talented cast. Prithviraj as Abdullah is charming and convincing but not consistent. Saiju and Vijay have given convincing performances, while Isha and Hana didn't have much to do. Meanwhile, the supporting cast including Siddique have given heartfelt performances.

At its core, Theerppu is an old-school revenge thriller with greedy villains, opportunistic Tomfoolery, and hatred-fueled protagonists. However, there is a messaging that hits hard: When karma hits you, you lose things you craved so much. And that's why the movie is worth a watch.
