UNLIKELY LEGACIES OF KOLLYWOOD

Politics in India is accused of being heavily dynastic. Well, sometimes cinema too gets dynastic. Almost everyone born in a family that has got a ‘not too bad’ connection with cinema does try their hand at the tinsel town. That is fine, but the overwhelming favorite amongst all aspirants seems to be the job in front of the camera, acting. A few also get interested in direction. But that’s about it! The other aspects are seldom acquired; they are mostly inherited like Yuvan did from Ilayaraja with great merit and commitment. But, there are only a few who have sidestepped the legacies that they inherited and chose to travel on a new path. That courage and conviction really needs to be applauded because it is never easy to be yourself when everyone is closely watching. Nevertheless, they had the gumption to choose with a difference and here we take a look at some of the most unlikely legacies of Kollywood.
Shruti Haasan
Kamal Haasan - Shruti Haasan, Akshara Haasan
Being the Universal Star’s daughters, an opening in acting might not have been hard to come by. We thought that Shruthi was choosing that path when she made her Hindi debut with Luck. But she surprised us all with a very sensitive score in Unnaipol Oruvan. Kamal’s daughter has become a music director! And, in the same movie there was another surprise with Akshara Haasan choreographing the ‘Vaanam Ellai’ song which did have a very sophisticated look about it. But of course, we know that there are few facets of film making that Kamal himself has not touched. So, his daughters taking to music and choreography is not hugely surprising either.
