KOLLYWOOD’S CALL FOR FREEDOM

India turns 62 today. A day to rejoice for every Indian. There might be causes for concern and reasons to brood, but today is a day that is worth celebration for being part of such a great country that can overwhelm you with its immense diversity. Yet, we are a country, united by a force that is beyond description. What made India? What got us freedom from the clutches of foreign rule? A struggle where many laid the costliest sacrifice for the cause of the nation. Cinema has always taken delight and pride in looking at the freedom struggle and the great names that were part of it. Here are some of Kollywood’s best flicks that have looked at the freedom struggle from different perspectives.
Kamaraj
Kamaraj
A film on one of Tamil Nadu’s most loved and revered leaders needed to be better received. Of course, the biopic of the Late Kamraj was not meant to be an entertainer of any kind, it was a true to life account of the events that marked the growth of the great leader from humble beginnings to being a prominent figure in the independence movement, to the national leadership of the Congress Party, his pioneering moves that changed the face of education in Tamil Nadu and much more. Without an ensemble star cast or much fan fare, Kamaraj exemplified the single most significant trait of the great man; simplicity.
