WHAT’S IN A NAME: ASK KOLLYWOOD?

What’s in a name? Very little, especially for cinema, one might think. It is just a means for identifying the movie; it’s the story and performances that really make a movie popular. But ask Kollywood and you might get a different reply. A name has its share of importance. Be it for tax sops or for individuality, a lot of thought has to be invested into titles and sometimes it is important to change them midway if you feel they are not working. Here are some of the most famous title changes in Kollywood over the past years.
Unnaipol Oruvan
Thalaivan Irukkiran - Unnaipol Oruvan
After Marmayogi was unfortunately shelved, we first got the hint of things to come when reports came in about Rajkamal Films International having registered the title Thalaivan Irukkiran. There were quite a few assorted rumors that claimed that it would be a Rs. 60 crore biggie. It is only later that we learnt that the remake rights of ‘A Wednesday’ had been bought and by the time the official announcement along with the first stills came along, the title was changed quite appropriately to Unnaipol Oruvan.
