Devarattam director Muthaiah clarifies on controversies ft Viswasam

Muthaiah's films are criticised for glorifying a particular community, thereby lending a casteist undertone to his films. His recent film is no exception. In a recent interview to Behindwoods, the director had attempted to clear the air of controversies that surround his filmography.

When questioned about the title of his recent film, he replied "The titles of my films are based on names of my protagonists. In Devarattam, my character's name is Vettri, but the title can be misintepreted by people. Hence we initially went with the title Vetri-aattam. Since 'Devarattam' was more catchier and synonymous to that title, we finalized on the latter,".

When asked about whether Tamil cinema's portrayal of characters with respect to their social backfrop must be a question of debate, Muthiah quipped that "I watch a film for what it is, for instance take Viswasam, which was narrated with the same (community based) backdrop. The film had more of such elements."
