AMMA'S RETURN TAKES US BACK TO FEW STANDOUT WOMEN-CENTRIC MOVIES...

If K.Balachander had to direct a movie of a female protagonist fighting her way through enormous hurdles, he would not have found a better script than the life of the Tamil Nadu CM, Dr. J.Jayalalitha.

 

The scene was almost perfect; straight out of a movie script. 'Amma’ waits in anticipation over a prevail-or-perish verdict on Mother’s Day. The verdict comes out in her favor and her supporters erupt in joy, celebrating ‘Mother’s Day’ a day after the rest of the world.

 

Coming to think about it, the return of ‘Amma’ takes us to a trip down the memory lane of movies that resonate with the astounding struggle and subsequent triumph of women. This is maybe a good time to slack back on the couch and watch classics such as Agni Sakshi, Manadhil Urudhivendum, Achamillai Achamillai, Kalki etc.

 

While KB has already touched upon the sense and sensibilities of a woman, it is good to know that the current generation is also starting to make women-centric films such as 36 Vayadhinile, Anaamika and so on.
