We are not fighters - SPB

Aug 20, 2013

The Indian Singers Rights Association (ISRA) is a newly developed society that collects royalties from organizations such as Broadcasters, FM stations, hotels and mobile operators who play music for commercial purposes.

Yesterday, 19th August 2013, at Chennai, the members of the South Indian Film Music Fraternity gathered to extend their support to the new organization. Top playback singers such as K.J.Yesudas, Sujatha, S.P.Balasubramaniam, Mano, Srinivas, P.Susheela, Hariharan, Vani Jayaram and many more, signed up and offered their support.

We are not fighters. We are artists and demanding what is long overdue to us. It is going to be a small sum that most of us would get as recognition of our work.”  Singer S.P. Balasubramaniam said.

Sunil Tandon, the association’s Managing Director mentioned that the association will have a dedicated TARIFF card based on which the royalty will be collected.  According to the Copyrights Amendment Act, royalty can be provided for a period of 50 years. Hence, the ISRA would be collecting royalties for songs that were recorded after 1963.
