AJITH - THE ONE MAN SHOW

By Kaushik.L.M

Big stars generally opt for a festival release as that is the time when the celebratory mood is high and fans are ever-willing to spend their time and money at the cinema theaters during the opening weekend. The hype is that much more when it’s festival time. Vijay’s movies generally release for either Diwali or Pongal over the past two years or so. Few other movies also release along with the main star showcase to cash in on the festival spirit.

But, if we take a look at Ajith’s release pattern over the past few years, we can see that most of his movies invariably release as solo features.

In 2007, two of his three releases, Kireedam and Billa, came solo on July 20th and December 14th respectively. Billa reigned over the yearend festivities and became a blockbuster.

On February 5th 2010, his Aasal also released solo after a slew of releases in January such as Goa, Aayirathil Oruvan and Thamizh Padam.

In 2011, his blockbuster Mankatha opened on August 31st to terrific returns. Ajith had lived up to his ‘King of Opening’ tag yet again and the movie went on to become a blockbuster thanks to its collections. The fact that it released solo also helped its cause that much more.

On July 13, 2012 Billa 2 released amid Himalayan hype and hoopla. This was yet again a solo release and the movie witnessed a never seen before opening weekend.

Ajith fans would eagerly be looking forward to his future releases which are helmed by directors such as Vishnuvardhan and Siva.
