Thank god it’s Friday
       - Weekend buffet
By Harish V
November 23, 2007
Hi and welcome back to Thank god it’s Friday, your weekly guide to the weekend's new movies. It is always calm after the storm. Usually after Deepavali at least for another month or two, there won’t be any multiple releases. But this year, the Deepavali releases became a disappointment and only one was able to reach the blockbuster status, which is
Oram Po

Om Shanti Om. Vel and Polladhavan were termed hits but none other was able to live up to the expectations. The producers and distributors decided to cash in on this situation and are going to release as much as seven movies in the theatre.

If the multiple releases are said to be good news then wait till you hear this, each and every single movie is very different and caters to different genres. So people have so much of a variety like there is a movie catering to Fantasy action, Comedy, another a crime thriller, and another a sentimental drama. You name it and you got it. Now before you get a little impatient and close this page I will go on to the analysis.

Kelvikuri

The movie is about a couple who gets into trouble go to the police and their life becomes hell as they are arrested and due to humiliation the wife dies and how the husband seeks vengeance forms the rest of the story. The movie has a striking resemblance to a Bollywood movie called "Kalyug" which was again a rehash of a Hollywood thriller. The hero and heroine are newcomers Jailani and Sonia. But lack of good marketing is sure to impact its box office status. The movie is sure to open low and only if the movie is good can it ride on the word of mouth. Let's just wait and see.

Why you should see it? – The premise seems very interesting and the newcomers can bring freshness to the movie.

Why you shouldn't? – Do you even know that the movie is releasing?

Lonely hearts

This movie is going to be interesting, as the big names of Hollywood like John Travolta, Salma Hayek, James Gandolfini, and Jared Leto are part of it. The movie is set in 1940s and is about real life serial killer couple, who called themselves the lonely heart killers. The movie is very dark and gives a film noir kind of a feel. Still it is quite disturbing to know that even after having such star power the movie which was released in 2006 world over managed to get just a mere 2 million dollar in its full run, which was almost the first weekend gross of Sivaji in UK and US alone. So if you still want to watch this movie you can spend the big bucks or else just go to a movie rental and buy the DVD.

Why you should watch it? - Because you love Salma Hayek or John Travolta and you were quite impressed by the camera work.

Why you shouldn't? – Because there is a chance that you will end up lonely in the theatres as there is no marketing for the movie.

Rameswaram

Rameshwaram is about a Sri Lankan refugee in Rameshwaram played by Jeeva being loved head over heels by an Indian beauty Bhavana. Will there love succeed? Or will the differences in nationality play spoil sport? Have we not seen almost the same story of differences of nationality recently with the girl hailing from Pakistan? Hmmm. But I personally feel the trailers were a little clichéd and I sincerely hope that the movie proves me wrong. Because Jeeva, who is one of the most promising youngster around is acting and he has rarely made a mistake in selecting the scripts after Raam happened. Let's hope that Jeeva and Rameshwaram do impress and another positive aspect of the movie is its music by Niru who impressed with his tunes in Arya's Kalaba Kadhalan.

Why you should see it? – You loved its music and you are a fan of Jeeva and want to see what he has done differently in this movie.

Why you shouldn't? – The trailer was not that good and gave a sense of déjà vu.

Onbadhu roobai Nottu

Thangar Bachchan is back, after his Pallikoodam getting a good reception he has decided to make another movie based on his literary work Onbadhu roobai Nottu. Sathyaraj signed up for this movie after he got good feed from almost everyone about his performances and he decided to do movies, which has some scope to explore his acting skills. Here the movie goes through the journey of a man called Madhava Padayachi played by Sathyaraj and to give him company the yesteryear actress Archana. The movie is set to be an amazing drama and people please take your handkerchief with you, as you would need its help as the movie rolls out.

Why you should see it? – Thangar Bachchan is back and going to win the hearts of many with this movie, which has already started the buzz for a national award.

Why you shouldn't? – If you are looking for entertainment or a fun time, then the theatres, which are showing this movie, will be the last place on earth to get it.

Aaja Nachle

The queen of Bollywood who was missing in action for almost 5 years is back. Yes, the dancing sensation, the dream girl of millions Madhuri Dixit is making her comeback and inviting you all to dance with her. Aaja Nachle, a movie about a New York dancer of Indian descent, Dia (Madhuri Dixit) returning to her small town in India to save her guru Makarand's beloved Ajanta theatre which is under threat of demolition. With the help of a local doctor, they work together to save the theatre by putting together a new production using the locals despite all sorts of problems. It's an inspirational tale with an ensemble cast of Konkana Sen, Kunal Kapoor and Ranvir Shorey. The movie though been waited with bated breath has not lived up to its reputation in the advance booking department and even the music sales have not been up to the mark. But if the movie is good the word of mouth should surely help.

Why you should see it? – Madhuri Dixit (do you need any more reason to see it)

Why you shouldn't? – The story is very simple and we do know the outcome. So let's wait for the reviews before venturing into the theatres.

Beowulf

Robert Zemeckis is back to play with the 3D animation once again, but this time there is no magical train or Santa Claus but there is the half naked CG Angelina Jolie (the naked scenes have been cut to obtain a PG aka (U Rating)) and CG Ray Winstone, as the warrior, Beowulf, who must fight and defeat the monster Grendel, who is terrorizing towns. The new attempt in 3D animation is very effective and the Digital 3D film is a treat to watch. People who loved 300 will love this, as there are loads of graphic action sequences.

The movie can very well be picked as the top this week but Robert Zemeckis who is a legend in the Hollywood is hardly known in India. But the treatment meted out to his movies can only get better after this, but for now the movie should run due to the tremendous marketing and the slow increase in the audience for animated movies.

Why you should see it? - 3D animation at its best, and because you loved 300 and want to see a legendary action story.

Why you shouldn't? – Angelina Jolie's naked scenes have been cut? Why would anyone want to see this movie now??

Now for the Behindwoods.com pick of the week

Behindwoods.com pick of the week is Oram Po

Oram Po has been in the cans for quite some time, and the impressive trailer was first shown almost a year ago. And after changing the release dates infinite times and reasons unknown, it is finally hitting the screens today. The hero Arya and heroine Pooja has been waiting for quite a while now and in the middle they haven't released any other movies, which have also hurt their star power. But as they both are again getting together for Naan kadavul and for the fact that they sizzled as a pair in Late Jeeva's Ullam Ketkumae, it will be quite interesting to see them together.

But what makes this movie special is the husband-wife director duo's exceptionally edited Trailer. A trailer which can bring a smile on anyone's face every time it is aired. Even the music by G.V. Prakash released in the early 2007 is still able to get a decent amount of listeners and which can only get better as the movie releases. Hoping that the full movie will be as good as the trailer, I have decided to award this the Pick of the week.

Why you should watch it? – After seeing the trailer who wouldn't?

Why you shouldn't? – A movie releasing after almost a year would surely lose its charm, and the trailers have set a high standard, which can affect its prospect if the movie doesn't live up to its name.

Verdict – Choose your genre and enjoy
