“IF IT WAS INTENDED TO HURT ILAYATHALAPATHY, I WOULDN’T HAVE DONE IT” - NATTY

Interview Team : Sudharshan

From being a cinematographer to a passionate actor, Natarajan Subramanian loves to explore. Lovingly called Natty, this pan-Indian technician has to his credit some of the best works in the recent times like, Jab We Met, Black Friday, Parineeta, Raanjhanaa and many more.

After enjoying success with his recent Sathuranka Vettai, he is geared up to wield the lens again for Vijay – Chimbudevan project. Sudharshan Giridhar, Correspondent, Behindwoods.com, catches up with Natty for a casual chat. Read on…

How’s the response for Sathuranka Vettai?

Spectacular… It really is overwhelming. We never expected the movie to have such booming response. The reason behind the success would have to be Lingusamy and Subash Chandrabose. Despite the lack of star power in the film, and a fresh team, they took up the film. They knew the market risks involved in such movies, yet they respected the content enough to go for it.

That’s the passion with which they work. I was stunned by the level of promotions they gave for Sathuranka Vettai.

As far as the feedbacks, many say the film is as impactful as Parthiban sir’s Puthiya Padhai. More than anything, few even compared my work to his. Parthiban sir is a true genius and when people compare my work with his, it’s a huge deal for me.

Many young directors, who watched the film during the premiere, called me and said I was good.

Many say Sathuranka Vettai is as impactful as Parthiban sir’s Puthiya Padhai.

How nervous were you prior the release?

I had my share of fears, alright. I’m not degrading my earlier movies, but they weren’t all blockbusters.  Be it Naalai, Chakra Vyugham, Milaga or Muthukku Muthaga, they were all experimental. So is Sathuranka Vettai and I wanted this to succeed. My biggest fear was if people would accept me.

All my fears went poof, when people started appreciating our work…

Why did you pick Sathuranka Vettai?

It’s very simple. When the director approached me for the role, he told me a dialogue from the movie. He said, “When someone cheats you, do not take him to be your enemy. In a way, he is your master, because…”

It was the ‘because’ part that pulled me into the script and the dialogue was the sole reason why I took up the project.

After he narrated the whole script, the first thing I asked him was, “Where were you for so long?”

After Vinoth narrated the whole script, the first thing I asked him was, “Where were you for so long?”

The challenges faced during Sathuranka Vettai…

The first major challenge was the budget. The film had to be completed in a minimum budget. The locations we shot in didn’t even have basic necessities.

Then came the major part, where we had to sell the movie. It all ended well when Manobala sir called me and said Thirrupathi Brothers have shown interest in the project. All our problems came to an end the moment they came in.

All our problems came to an end the moment Thirrupathi Brothers came in.

Why do you think director Vinoth approached you for the lead role?

I have to thank producer Bharani. He has also played my Guru in the movie.

He called me one day and said he heard a fantastic script that would be perfect for me. I’m not sure why he thought that, but I’m glad he did. He sent Vinoth to me and you know the rest.

I actually asked the director, why me, when there are bigger heroes. He said that he did approach a few of them, but they didn’t feel the adrenalin rush while they heard the script. It did for me and Vinoth knew it. I had that rush, because I knew people who had experienced similar situations like the snake sequence in the movie.

I must also thank Manobala sir, who agreed to keep me as the lead. For a man of his reputation, he could have roped in a bigger actor. He did trust me and gave me the part, for which I’m thankful.

So, what was Vijay’s reaction to calling the snake Ilayathalapathy?

Honestly, he didn’t ask me anything. In fact no one did.  It was a commercial move to name the snake after the superstar and it wasn’t intended to hurt anyone. If it was indeed intended to hurt Vijay, I myself wouldn’t have taken up the project. Vijay is my close friend and I knew he’d approve of it.

Your involvement in the visual department of the film…

If I’m not part of the cinematography department, I don’t interfere in it. As an actor, I had enough on my plate to handle and honestly I didn’t have the time to keep a watch on our cinematographer. Moreover, KG Venkatesh is a brilliant technician. As a matter of fact, he was the one to help me look better. I came across a few pretty girls who thought I was handsome, all thanks to Venkatesh.

If I’m not part of the cinematography department, I don’t interfere in it.

Being a cinematographer, isn’t it difficult to stop yourself from interfering in the visual department?

It’s a valid point. But when the department is in the hands of a responsible person, you do not have to worry at all. Also, I had to remain a spectator because I didn’t have the time to think about it.

Most of your cinematography projects are centered in the Bollywood. Why?

No particular reason actually. I kind of started my career there and continued to get more projects. But I do cinematography projects here too. I am currently part of Vijay – Chimbudevan project. Language doesn’t matter to me. It’s the art that drives me.

Language doesn’t matter to me. It’s the art that drives me.

As a cinematographer, what do you look for in a project?

Apart from being new, the project must be in a new genre and at the same time, it must have scope for me to explore my skills. I also like to be a part of romcoms and action movies. Since I have done a lot of romcoms, I’d prefer more action scripts. So basically, it’s my curiosity that helps me take up or refuse a project.

You are one of the leading cinematographers in the country. But you don’t seem to mind helping other cinematographers with patch works…

Cinematography is my profession and no matter how big is the job, I’ll always take it up. Santosh Sivan asked me to do a song in Thuppakki. He said, “Natty Kutta… Do this song for me… I’m stuck with something else”.

If a production house asks me to work on the patch work, I’ll contact the cinematographer of the project and get an NOC from him, before taking it up.

More than just work, this is how you build relationships. I like to be in good touch with all my colleagues. Earning friendships is more important for me.

Santosh Sivan said, “Natty Kutta… Do this song for me… I’m stuck with something else”.

You have worked with a lot of big Bollywood filmmakers… Who all do you think keep good track of Tamil cinema?

We all know Anurag Kashyap does. Imtiaz Ali too keeps a track of us. In fact, they watch us very closely, starting from what films are currently on floors to the box-office reports of all our movies. Shoojit Sircar is also a huge fan of our films.

For some reasons, they find our cinema very intriguing and artistic.

The biggest technicians in Bollywood are from the South. Why?

Basics are taught better down South and technicians are trained in all the departments here. There’s more practical training given here, I think.

What can we expect from Vijay 58?

It’ll be a very entertaining mass film. I’ll give you more exciting details once the formal announcements are made. But I can tell you that this film will raise a lot of eyebrows.

Personally I’m very excited to be a part of this film, the first reason being Ilayathalapathy Vijay. Then there’s Sridevi, Sudeep, Shruti Haasan, Hansika and along with all of them I’m going to have a blast.

What next?

After Vijay 58, I’m looking to concentrate on acting. I have decided to act in two films a year at least. My next film will be Katham Katham. The shoot has been wrapped up and the post production is in its full swing.

I’ll also be working as a cinematographer in Hindi films simultaneously. That’s how I roll!
