NHRC issues notice to Karnataka prisons department

The National Human Rights Commission has reportedly issued notices to Karnataka prisons department asking them to file an explanation within four weeks after 32 inmates were allegedly tortured and shifted to various prisons across the state. These prisoners reportedly tried to stage dharna as they were not allowed to speak to the DIG (prisons) D Roopa. The commission took cognizance based on a complaint lodged by BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje, which said the family members of these prisoners are not being allowed to meet them.
