I have always been fond of Tamil cinema and its stars. I try not to take sides but sit back and enjoy the diverse genres Kollywood throws up. Kollywood has had its shares of superheroes that can fight 20+ men single handedly and save nations. We have had MGR, Sivaji, Rajini, Kamal and now Vijay and Ajith. These two seemed set to take over the reigns from the legends. Suriya and Vikram try daringly different roles while carrying off realistic super hero roles. Amidst all this, Vijay has stood by his belief that the "common man" needs and enjoys mass masala hero movies that lack logic. I and scores of other cinema lovers believe that it’s high time he ditched this belief and changed courses, because this "common man" does not exist any more. The common man has always been and is more intelligent than ever.

Let’s analyze. I see Vijay as being projected by the media as to step in to the shoes of Rajnikanth. The trouble is this. Rajnikanth (and even the late MGR) has shown enough diversity in his career to showcase histrionics and diversity that have satisfied the needs of a true fan. Even Rajini's latest Sivaji was a revelation and the superstar is following up with Endhiran (while he could have safely chosen anther formula script) which can be viewed as a huge gamble. The trouble with Vijay is he has given up trying to be different. Now before taking a bashing approach, I do acknowledge that Vijay has indeed tried out something different (Like the negative role he played in Priyamudan and Friends which was definitely different). The problem is it has been far
and few in between and has been without conviction. Look at his record after Ghilli, his last TRUE blockbuster. Sorted by the most recent.

Sura
Vettaikaran
Villu
Kuruvi
Azhagiya Tamil Magan
Pokkiri
Aathi
Sivakasi
Sachein
Thirupaachi
Madhure

Watching Sura was an ordeal that I would not suggest even to my most bitter enemy and that was the breaking point that culminated in writing this article. Answer with a true heart. With the expectation of Sachein and may be Azhagiya Tamil Magan, you can probably mix and match scenes from rest of the films and still see a coherent movie. Such has been the monotony and predictability of his movies. A crude loud mouthed villain who seems to be in awe of the hero. A cute north Indian girl who invariably falls for our hero no matter what his social status is and runs around in skimpy clothes. A sentimental mom who seems to know her son's prowess. Each and every movie has this unshakable framework with our Hero running towards a mission. I mean it’s getting boring even for the hardcore Vijay fan.

Being a senior actor, Vijay would be expected to lead the way for the next generation and in this I believe he has faltered so far. I personally believe that he has become a talented actor through his work and easily has the skills to perform much diverse roles. Vijay can keep on quoting that he caters to his fans and doles out meaningless movies or he can use his experience, trust his fans and give something different. With his charisma (superior dancing skills which usually seem to evade south Indian superstars), he could easily be one of the biggest superstars of Kollywood by the time he finishes. But time is running out for him. His closest rival in terms of fan base, Ajith Kumar has recently shown a strong approach towards meaningful and life-like superstar roles while Vikram and Suriya just keep getting better.

Vijay has the promise. Now it needs to be fulfilled.
