I am an avid fan of Tamil cinema. I would like to share some experiences after watching numerous films from my child hood. Tamil cinema has been seeing its growth from its olden days. There has been a constant growth and improvement in each and every aspect like story, screen play, direction, technical competence, acting, budget etc of Tamil film making. I have been in awe after seeing many films which challenges international film making. Still there is a vacuum in Tamil cinema that needs to be filled. Still there are some areas that need to be explored. Yes, I am talking about genres. Tamil cinema has covered genres like Drama, Action, Comedy, Family, mystery, Romance, Thriller. But there are many genres that need to be covered and taken care. But I am going to discuss two important genres which need special care and importance. War and Sci-fi. I haven’t seen any movie which is based on these two genres. Thank God. One Sci-Fi movie is on the roll which is going to come up next month. Thanks to Shankar. But on War, have we seen any movie on War? I guess one Malayalam movie was dubbed in Tamil (Aran) tried to cover war genre. But no war movie has been produced In Tamil. Have not we seen Wars in India? From olden days we have seen many wars. Kargil war, war between India and China, we can even take war between Tamil nations during sanga kaalam. But who gives a damn about it? No one! We have seen many Hollywood war films portrayed realistic to the core. How far we are on this? Many films like Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, and Apocalypse now are classics in Hollywood cinema. There is a civil war going on Srilanka. Have we taken any movie on that? No.

Tamil Cinema must see new shores. There are many genres remain untapped here. Take Sci-fi. Have we come across any Sci—fi Tamil movies? We understand the budget involved in making such movies. We are ready to make big budget movies using super stars. Having the same money, we can use any actor to make War or Sci-fi movies. Why we are not ready to make such a daring step. Now a days we can’t fool Tamil audiences. They are too bright. An actor with no fame can see success in Tamil cinema. Why? Audiences look only at the story, direction, narration etc. We can make it possible. We can provide new taste to Tamil fans. We will be able to provide new visuals to their eyes. A Hollywood Sci-fi movie like “inception” can make Tamil people talk about it for days. Why can’t we produce a home grown Sci-fi movie? This can be achieved only with the hands of directors and producers. They both must be willing to do such movies. They must believe in themselves as well as us. Tamil industry, kindly look into it. This is my humble suggestion. Long live Tamil cinema!!

Jeffy
