Anything associated with Aamir Khan has been creating a lot of hype for the past few years. Be it acting in films, commercials, producing movies or interviews, Aamir has always hogged the limelight. This time, it is his production venture "Peepli Live", directed by debutant Anusha Rizvi. The music of the album has been composed by Indian Ocean and Nageen Tanvir. Knowing what the film is all about, it certainly made me curious what this album will be all about. We could easily conclude that the songs will be mostly folk-oriented. Let us see what Peepli has to offer.

Des Mera...
Music: Indian Ocean
Vocals: Indian Ocean

Lyrics:
Sanjeev Sharma and Swanand Kirkire

  Peepli Live

Des Mera starts very interestingly with impeccable chorus and some feel-good music. A very interesting fusion this with the electric guitar notes amazingly merging with our own folk music. Sanjeev and Swanand's lyrics joyfully narrate the India as of today with the various haps and mishaps that happens around us. The vocals and music cannot be separated and this song surely falls into the listen-again category.

Mehngai Dayain...

Music: Ram Sampath

Vocals: Raghuveer Yadav

"Sakhi Sayya Tu Khoobai Khamaat Hai... Mehangaayi Dhayan Khaaye Jaat Hai"... The grievance of farmers on price rise on essential commodities rings loudly. But the message is not conveyed through anger but rather jokingly. Oh yes, we definitely get the message loud and clear. Very interesting song, this. No synthesized music, no guitars, drums... looks a live recording with a bunch of people with a harmonium. Close your eyes, feel the harmonium, the sound of the cymbals and you are in Peeli on a twilight evening with the villagers. Just mesmerizing. If you like this genre of music - folk - this one must impress you.

Zindagi Se Darte Ho...

Music: Indian Ocean

Vocals: Indian Ocean
Lyrics: Noon Meem Rashed

Just when you get the feel of the village, we are just whooshed away by Zindagi Se Darte Ho. This is core of the movie. The song questions the very thought of committing suicide and motivates us to stand up and fight. The up and down tempo of the song is captivating. The lyrics go fantastically well with the music which makes the song hard-hitting. Indian Ocean proves you wrong if you already had an "opinion" listening to the first two songs. Mind blowing number.

Chola Maati Ke Ram...
Music: Nageen Tanvir

Vocals:
Nageen Tanvir
Lyrics: Gangaram Sakhet

Chola Maati Ke Ram brings you back to Peepli. Nageen Tanvir just ties you up and takes you on a journey. A journey that is very new to Bollywood. Get away from the Disco and Pop numbers and taste the real music of India. This song will be more interesting to listen with the visuals of the village. Great folk music.

Des Mera II...
Music: Indian Ocean
Vocals: Indian Ocean

A remix of the original, this one sounds nearly the same as the first. A sprinkle of English lyrics here and there makes it interesting. A little jazz works but it makes me wonder the intention to include this. I would strictly stick to the original.

Mehngai Dayain Remix...
Music: Ram Sampath
Vocals: Raghuveer Yadhav

Am I sill listening to Peepli music? Remixes never interest me. This one too. What was a delightful original number has been layered with different kinds of music which makes you dance but the essence has been lost. It, especially, gets too noisy in the end. As mentioned, stick to the original.

Overall: Peepli has a couple of fantastic folk-soaked tracks which is so refreshing to hear in today's Rock n' Roll numbers. A special mention should be made of Indian Ocean who started their journey in 1990. Famous for their "Indo-rock fusion with jazz-spiced rhythms", they have done a fantastic job in this album with their music and vocals. Not someone to bow to pressure or compromising the originality for commercial viability, Aamir's penchant for perfection is quite evident in each song of the album.

Verdict:

Peepli - a whiff of fresh air..

- Songs to Watch out!
