Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia at the same time!
By Behindwoods News Bureau.
April 14, 2008

When it rains, it pours. It is not every Friday that movies that show mental illnesses release at the box office. But when they did, they came all at once. U, Me aur Hum and Krazzy 4 released on Friday are as different as chalk and cheese but they both deal with mental disorders, even though in totally different perspectives.

Krazzy

Both movies may not be technically or medically perfect in showing the problems of patients but then that is expected in cinema, everything has to be a bit exaggerated and the ending has to be happy. U, Me aur Hum deals with Alzheimer’s, and Kajol is the victim of this dreaded disease which erases the pages of memory slowly but surely leaving no possibility of recovery. Alzheimer’s is something that has not been dealt extensively in cinema before except in the 2005 Malayalam movie Thanmathra starring Mohanlal. In Thanmathra, the patient starts losing memory from the present and goes back wards in time, clearly remembering things long past but forgetting the present. In fact, the mind goes back to what it was when the patient was a child. Not being able to recognize family members. But then at the climax there is the occasional flash where all memory comes back fro a brief period before the patient relapses into dementia. In U, Me aur Hum the patient loses memory, identity, forgets places, names and everything in daily life. The only difference being that the patient is not shown as relapsing into childhood memories. The directors of both movies, Blessy and Ajay Devgan, have done a great job in handling the theme extremely well. Ajay, especially so because the movie is his directorial debut and the theme was risky. Without resorting to many theatrics, the troubles of the patient and more importantly, the agony of their near and dear ones who have to see them in such a sorry state have been shown.

In Krazzy 4 we are on a different plane. It is not the first time that mentally challenged characters have been used for comic relief. And it is not really in bad taste, or a case of being insensitive. Krazzy 4 is about 4 different people with different problems, here collectively labeled as schizophrenia- though many people who actually know the facts might object to the use of the word. Schizophrenia or not, the movie really doesn’t show many facts except that they have partially lost touch with reality.

In terms of box office results, the movies show different graphs, but they both seem headed for the same destination. Krazzy 4, the comic caper, got off to a brisk start and has come out with not too bad a word of mouth- and this coupled with its basically entertainment-oriented content and two superstar item songs must see it safely through to the profit side. Meanwhile, U, Me aur Hum was a bit slow off the blocks but as reports are suggesting, the movie is getting very encouraging word of mouth and has picked up at multiplexes all over. On the road to success as well.
