Tamil cinema has always been
a medium of mass entertainment.
The mixture of drama, music,
songs and histrionics has
attracted and kept the audience
hooked. Those actors and directors
who have given the right combination
have been successful. There
are some personalities who
have used cinema as a medium
of social change. Examples
are Kalaignar Karunanidhi
and N.S. Krishnan. It is interesting
to study the contribution
of N.S.Krishnan. NSK or Kalaivanar
as he is popularly called
was the first reformer- comedian
who used subtle humor to educate
people. He was the first to
use comedy meshed nicely with
the main story to bring a
message. He poked fun at the
society’s hypocrisies
on dowry, bigamy, drinking,
class system etc. He also
advocated thrift, prohibition,
patriotism and women’s
empowerment. His wife, T.A.
Madhuram was a perfect foil
for his screen persona and
they were a hit pair of their
times.
