Movies made on topical issues have always had some or the other trouble rocking their release. Remember, R.K. Selvamani’s Kutrappathirikkai based on Rajiv Gandhi assassination episode? It met several objections with the censors and did not see the light of day. A new movie on the slain forest brigand Veerappan is raising several eyebrows. When Veerappan first hit the news in the mid80s, Captain Prabhakaran which was a loose screen adaptation of his heroics was made. The full length action film was a superhit. Now there are mysterious twists to the killing of Veerappan which are being unveiled daily. Points and counterpoints from his family, police, government and the Human Rights organizations are keeping the public interest agog. In such a scenario, we have an out and out comedy film on the Veerappan capture called Padhavi Paduthum Padu in which no stunts, chases, gunfire etc. have been used.

The film is being produced by G.Murthy, a lawyer on behalf of G.M. Movies. The
kidnapping of Kannada superstar Rajkumar and minister Nagappa, the alliance between Tamil nationalist Maran and Veerappan, the mediation efforts by Nakkeeran Gopal and association with P.Nedumaran, Prof.Kalyani, and Dr.Banu have all been woven together. Yesteryear hero Ravichandran plays Rajkumar. Ranjit is Veerappan paired with Anamika. Rajesh is Maran, Vasu Vikram as Gopal and Pyramid Natarajan as Nagappa are the other main characters.

The movie shows the protagonist Malayappan coming out of the forest to meet his concubine and imitating elephant calls(just like Veerappan used to) to ward off police search parties hot on his heels. How he is rounded up is the climax of the film. We chat up with the producer with a slew of questions. Here we go!

Q: Don’t you think your movie will ruffle some feathers?
A: No, not at all. The movie is based on a series of the same name written by Sathya in Tughlaq. We have taken care not to hurt anybody’s sentiments. Any resemblance to real life persons has been warranted by the screenplay. We have used rollicking comedy which is sure to be lapped up by the audience. In fact, on the sets Ravichandran found it difficult to keep a straight face while acting out the kidnap drama because of the humorous dialogues by Sathya. We needed several retakes.

Q: You have shot the movie in several places that were Veerappan’s stronghold…
A: Yes, it had been difficult when he was alive. Now the villagers gave us total cooperation and we shot at Sathyamangalam, Mettur, Madheswaran Hill etc. The film will be released in May.

Q: Rajesh’s character reminds us of Maran, the Tamil nationalist….
A: All characterization has been done in tune with the story. Any resemblance to real life personalities is purely coincidental.

Q: We heard of a little mishap when Abhinayasri was shooting for the movie.
A: Well we had to shoot some of her scenes by the riverside. After pack up we noticed that a large crocodile had been resting all along on the opposite bank. There was no damage and everyone was safe.
