Thittam Irandu is a thriller drama written and directed by Vignesh Karthick and produced by Dinesh Kannan and Vinod Kumar under the banners Sixer Entertainment and Mini Studio respectively. The film has Aishwarya Rajesh, Ananya Ramprasad, Subash Selvam, Paval Navageethan, Gokul Anand and others in the crucial roles.

Athira (played by Aishwarya Rajesh) is a cop who is all set to don the hat of an inspector in Chennai. While travelling by a sleeper bus, she has to share a berth with Arjun (Subash Selvam). They become good friends, and later fall in love. She gets her first case as the inspector, which involves the murder of her childhood best friend Deepa Surya (played by Ananya Ramprasad). Whether she solves the case, and what Arjun has to do with the investigation forms the rest of the plot.

One of the elements that stands out in the film is the performance of Aishwarya Rajesh, for whom the role seems like a cakewalk. She handles the romantic portions with Arjun well, and makes us feel her pain during the emotional portions. Among the supporting actors, Subash Selvam and Gokul Anand are solid, but the star performer is Ananya Ramprasad. Her theatre background certainly helps her cause as she uses every single muscle on her face while emoting.

Director and writer Vignesh Karthick makes a strong mark in terms of direction and writing. The twists are well timed, and the emotions between the characters are strong. The twist also goes hand in hand with the biggest twist and it works like a charm. The screenplay is convincing and engaging for most of the film. Kudos to Vignesh Karthick for pulling this off smartly.

The film starts off as a thriller and these are the strongest portions of the film. It's gripping, and the story keeps you on the edge of the seat. However the problems start once the tone shifts to a drama, where the message is conveyed has a preachy shade. Although it is handled with utmost sensitivity, the message could have been woven more smoothly into the plot.

The writing is focussed and the way the characters are sketched looks satisfying. The most interesting is Athira's - consider this scene where she is talking with Arjun. They both are starting to know each other, and Athira says "why do people not see me as a normal woman? They run away looking at my profession... can't cops fall in love?" and she expresses her locked up feelings. When was the last time we saw a female cop let her vulnerabilities out in the open?

Among the technicians, though the songs don't have a repeat value, their melodious nature goes well with the film, and doesn't affect the engagement. The background score by Satish Ragunathan is good enough to compliment the film. Nothing much to complain about the visuals and the editing.

Overall, the film carries a good message about showering love on everyone and giving every individual their own space to think and act. It promotes inclusivity, and is quite clean in nature, fit for family audiences. This film's twists pleasantly surprises you and you won't regret watching this. The heart is at the right place and the weak links can be excused just for that.

Verdict: The surprise twists make Thittam Irandu, an engrossing watch.
