Actor Chris Rock, who came to announce the award for Best Documentary, joked about Will Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith's hair (she had shaved off her hair recently due to a health problem). The Will Smith couple sitting in the front row did not like this. This enraged Will Smith, who went to the stage and slapped Chris Rock. He then angrily shouted ‘Stop saying my wife’s name’ and went to his seat.

His statement read, "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness. I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us."

Tamil actress Vanitha Vijayakumar has given her opinion on this controversial incident. She said, "Man enough to protect his woman…man enough to accept his mistake….I’m so bloody proud I’m one of your biggest fans @willsmith @jadapinkettsmith. People underestimate violence….violence in all forms is unacceptable…I have been a victim… don’t physically abuse anyone…not even your worst enemy."

Another leading actress, Samantha, has said that Will Smith could have handled the matter in a way other than physical assault.
