The real Raman Raghav who inspired Anurag Kashyap's Raman Raghav 2

Madness is like gravity, all it needs is a push. Meet the Indian version of The Joker, Raman Raghav, based on whom is the upcoming Anurag Kashyap directorial starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui. During the mid 1960s a series of killings shook the citizens of Mumbai, especially the homeless and hutment dwellers. It was evident that a psycho killer was on his spree, killing people sleeping in the open streets using sharp objects.

As many as 19 people had been killed, when the police arrested a suspicious man loitering in the area. His name was Raman Raghav. That he had a number of charges including rape, murder and theft against him in the past, convinced the police that he was the killer. But he was left free because none of the survivors were able to identify him and they lacked evidence.

Meanwhile the killer struck again in 1968. Police forces spearheaded by DCP Ramakant Kulkarni took over the investigation. He was able to nab the killer and this time pin point with evidence that it was none other than the previously arrested Raman Raghav.Raman who initially refused to comply with police investigations started admitting to the crimes he committed after the police agreed to buy him chicken dish.

Interviews by psychologists revealed that he had a few systematized delusions in his mind that made him kill. He believed that there were two worlds: A world of lawfulness, of which he was a representative and a world of unlawfulness, in which he was living. He believed it was the government which was putting temptations before him. He also had an unshakeable belief that the people were trying to change his gender.

The upcoming movie Raman Raghav 2.0 has been received well at the Cannes film festival. Now that we know about the real Raman, a thrilling narrative can be expected from this film.
