Varma was directed by Bala with Dhruv Vikram as lead, but the critically acclaimed filmmaker opted out of the project due to creative differences. The project was then started from the scratch by the makers, with Gireesaaya helming Dhruv in the remake titled 'Adithya Varma'. The film starred Banita Sandhu, Priya Anand, Anbu Thasan and others in supporting roles.

Speaking about the experience from the sets of Varma, Sukumar said that Arjun Reddy is basically the Telugu version of Bala's Sethu.
